Collectible toy mechanical banks were some of the most complex banks and were generally made out of cast iron steel.  These really were produced in great quantities from about 1870 all the way to 1930.  Two of the more popular manufacturers of these toy mechanical banks were W.J. Shepard, and the Stevens Firm.  These now collectible toy mechanical banks can in many forms from buildings, cars, clowns, or whatever was popular at the time.

Toy mechanical banks are still being produced today in order to give entertainment to young children and also help to teach them how to save money, but the older toy mechanical banks made of cast iron from the 1870’s to the 1930’s are the most sought after by collectors in today’s market.  These are the most valuable and desirable as well.

These collectible toy mechanical banks would operate in two simple ways.  The first was the weight of the coin that was deposited, which would activate the mechanical toy bank and leave it ready for action.  The second way was that the child would have to flip a switch or pull a lever in order to get the toy into motion and let it do whatever it was that particular toy would do.  Each toy mechanical bank that had a different design would perform a different trick, or action.

Jonah and the Whale is the most sought after toy mechanical bank.  The model produced in 1880’s can be worth anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000 where as the model produced in the 1890’s may only bring a value of about $4,000 to $5,000 at a collectible auction.  There are other factors that take effect when trying to value these collectible toy mechanical banks such as condition and working order, as well as manufactured date, therefore making any collector that already owns one of these collectibles very proud, and others extremely envious.
