When you think of collectible toy banks from Buddy L, you think trucks. That is mainly because the truck toy banks were the most popular. In fact, Buddy L was so popular that they first started off as the Moline Pressed Steel Company in 1910 and in the 1920’s began manufacturing toy trucks and cars with the trade name as the Buddy “L” and are still in operation today. The name has changed a few times and now operates under the name of Buddy L Toy Company. The company was founded by Fred A. Lundahl and the name Buddy L came from the name of Lundahl’s child.

Interests in Steelcraft collectible pedal cars have become increasingly popular in the last decade or so for avid car collectors. The European’s in the 1880s started the vast craze of windup or spring-driven tinplate toys. The American firms, realizing the huge success of this expanding market, in the 20^th century began to produce large amounts of these spring driven tinplates and windup toys.

Quality of these windup toys weren’t exactly great, but the actions these toys provided sufficient amount of class to attract loyal followers.

Julius Chein, in 1903 was one of the few major American toy companies to offer windup toys, followed by Strauss in 1914 (who also worked for Louis Marx) and Louis Marx, himself, in the 1920s and 1930s produced a really wide spread of finer and now days very antique windup toys.

In the end of the 19^th century, the European makers of the spring driven and friction toys were pushing their toys, successfully in the United States. The American toy firms fought back because the European toys were so inexpensive that they were underselling the Americans, and they began to market spring driven toys.

Strauss and Marx who also made many collectible windup toys became the leading makers of spring driven and windup toys with colorful and lithographed designs. After World War II, with the introduction of plastic toys, they metal ones gradually died out, with the exception of many lower quality toys made by the Chinese and Japanese, which was considered less than collectible toys of the era.

One of the more famous toys manufacturers in America was the E.R. Ives and Company. They were one of the few to make windup toys but have become quite famous for them. It is very rare that you will find a chance to come across an Ives windup toy in today’s marketplace, if you do however, consider yourself very lucky. When Lionel took the Ives Company in 1929, collectable windup toy manufacturing had stopped.

Kilgore collectible cap guns

The Kilgore company manufactured many great toys throughout their business venture but the Kilgore collectible cap guns were amongst the favorites with young boys and some girls in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Some of these cap guns looked so realistic that many people could not tell the difference in the real guns and fake guns. Nearly all of the Kilgore collectible cap guns resemble different types of revolvers as the semi automatic pistols weren’t introduced until a later date. These collectible cap guns can come with designated cases, or holsters, that would comfortably sit on the belt of the person carrying it. These cap guns were especially popular with the young boys that were very interested in the outdoors games such as “Cops and Robbers” because it brought a whole new feeling of realism to the game itself.

The Kilgore “Big Bill” was one of the popular cap guns of that era. It was a single shot cap gun that measured about 5 inches long and was manufactured of cast iron. Some were originally nickel plated and these are the collectibles that will bring the most value out of all of the “Big Bill” cap guns. The “Big Bill” logo was embedded on the left hand side of the cap gun for added quality.

The deputy cap gun was one of the rarest, yet most sought after Kilgore collectible cap guns and was manufactured sometime between 1955 and 1960. It was a revolver style as well, and was made of die cast iron. It was 7 inches long, with a longer barrel than most and shot disc caps. It was made of all metal, even the grips, which helped to extend the life of the collectible cap gun. These are very hard to find, and even harder to find one that is in mint condition as if it just fell off of the assembly line. It had a nickel finish and had specific engraving on it as well.

The Wilkins 1890 cast iron train set

The Wilkins 1890 cast iron train set opened a lot of doors to the production of many cast iron toys for the next years. James Wilkins was the founder and had a true knack for building cast iron toys. These toys were very detailed (for the time) and very popular among most children and adults in 1890 and for the next few years. The cast iron train set was the most successful toy that James Wilkins created and sold over the few years of ownership, which started in 1890.

In 1890, James Wilkins bought the formerly known company, Triumph Wringer Company, and immediately gained success with the cast iron train set, and continued to build great toys such as the train sets and fire engines as well. Parker Brothers games from 1800’s

George S. Parker founded the original Parker Brothers company way back in 1800’s but it wasn’t named Parker Brothers at the time. His brother, Charles, joined their business in 1888 and the Parker Brothers name was officially formed in 1893. This duo brought on many of the great Parker Brother games from the 1800’s that many people do not recognize, but may recognize different games that was created with the idea of the originals in mind. Some of the classic games have been revised and are still around today.

George Parker created most of the games himself, and was the sole creator of all of the rules for the different games. Some of the most popular Parker Brothers games from the 1800’s were Klondike and War in Cuba. All of the games, at the time, were created with realistic events in mind, which were occurring at the time. Klondike was designed with the Alaskan Gold Rush in mind and themed after that even while the War in Cuba was based mainly upon the Spanish and American War, which was being fought at the time. These games didn’t seem like pieces of history, and most did not see them that way, but in modern day times, these are great games that can be used to study history and the events within.

Parker Brothers were just getting started in mainly board games in the 1800’s but was very highly talented in how they designed games that they set themselves up for a great business that brought joy to families, especially children, all over the world. These classic games are very rare and to actually find one is nearly a miracle in itself, therefore, if you do happen to come across any Parker Brothers games from the 1800’s, consider yourself very lucky as many collectors have been chasing these games for many, many years.

Louis Marx & Company collectible toys

Louis Marx and company was a well known American Toy manufacturer from the years 1919-1978. Marx’s toys consisted of toy soldier’s, toy guns, action figures, dolls, toy cars and toy trains. The logo of the company had the letters “MAR” in a circle with an X through it, which resembled a railroad crossing sign. Although Louis Marx and company itself is largely forgotten by many, except toy collectors, a few toys still remain that are well known, such as: Rock’em Sock’em Robots, introduced in the 1960s and the Big Wheel ride on pedal toy which was introduced in the 1970s.

Louis Marx and his brother David founded the company in New York in 1919. Their main motto was “Give the customer more toy for less money” and “Quality is not negotiable,” it made the company highly successful. In the beginning, the company did not have product designs or manufacturing capacity. Marx then raised money, studying available products to make them cheaper and selling the product. Making these small changes, Marx was able to turn the toys into hits. He sold more than 8 million of his first two toys, the Alabama Minstrel Dancer and Zippo the Climbing Monkey.

During the 1920s Marx came up with a few of his own original toys, an example is the yo-yo, he didn’t invent the yo-yo but he made his own version. Marx sold an estimated 100 million of them and by 1922 Louis Marx and his brother David were millionaires.

In the 1950s Marx was the largest toy manufacturer in the world. He was also the initial inductee in the Toy Hall of Fame.

In 1972, he sold his company to Quaker Oats, who owns the Fisher-Price brand. The rights to some of his toys today are owned by several other companies. For example: Marx Big Wheel is owned by Kids Wheel, Inc., Rock’em Sock’em Robots is now claimed by Mattel.

Marx’s name has changed hands several times, knowing that they have similar names; today the Marx brand companies have no connection to the original Louis Marx and Company.

Lehmann 1890’s – 1930’s collectible windup toys were very popular for the time. The Lehmann Company was very versatile in the types of windup toys that they manufactured from horse drawn carriages, cars, trucks, to even small turtles. These windup toys would come is some sort of wheel system (each model was different, i.e. a turtle wouldn’t have wheels so they would be hidden) that would move along a hard surface once the toy was wound up.

On the side of these Lehmann 1890’s – 1930’s collectible windup toys, or in the rear, of the toy would feature a steel twist rod that was connected to spring loaded gears on the inside of the toy that would move a drive shaft (similar to how a car actually rolls) that turned the wheels and made the toy move across a hard surface such as concrete or wooden floor inside of the home.

The Lehman Company was a German based company that manufactured all sorts of toys that were distributed all over the world, but especially in Germany and Russia. They were made the most famous by their windup toys that were created during the 1890’s to the late 1930’s, though they did remain in business for many years thereafter.

These collectible windup toys can be found fairly easily nowadays for collectors all over the world, although finding a collectible windup toy that still works well is very rare due to the lack of knowledge of gears and proper maintenance at the time. There are, however, some of these toys available all over the world, and in working condition and can bring in a price of more than $1,000 while some that “stick” a little bit may bring in as much as $600 - $800 and $200 - $400 for some that do not work at all. Dinky Die Cast collectible toys burst onto the toy scene in the 1930’s, being produced by a man named Frank Hornby, who was part of the world famous Meccano Toy Company. These Dinky toys were originally created and intended to be used as accessories for the Hornby Trains, which were very popular at the time, but with the instant success of the Dinky die cast collectible toys, the company was all but forced to expand and add more products to their line such as trucks, buses, mini airplanes, and they even manufactured doll houses and furniture for a very brief time.
